8 Tips On How To Stay Properly Hydrated In Your 50s
The older you get as a woman, the more difficult it becomes for her to stay in shape, which of course doesn't make it less important. We all want to look good and be healthy and therefore we hopefully exercise regularly and some of us even follow a strict meal plan.
Did you know that a study published by scientists from the University of Michigan in 2012 showed that the odds of being not only overweight, but actually obese are approximately 1.6 times higher, if you are a person that doesn't stay properly hydrated throughout the day compared to one that does?
This doesn't necessarily mean that, if you don't drink enough water or tea, you will become obese eventually, but maybe we can use the knowledge to our advantage and make it easier for us to lose some weight by paying more attention to our daily drinking habits. How to do that? The following list provides you with my 8 tips on how to stay properly hydrated in your 50s!
Tip #1: A Glass Of Water In The Morning
Make it a habit of yours to drink a whole glass of water first thing in the morning. This way you can get in a good amount of liquid before your day has even started!
Tip: Especially in the beginning it's easier to place an already filled glass next to your bed the night before. If you see it immediately when you wake up, chances to forget about your new habit are a lot lower.
Tip #2: Learn To Differentiate Between Hunger And Thirst
Many people confuse being thirsty with being hungry and instead of refreshing themselves with a drink, they tend to eat. This phenomenon, although it could not be proven, was also part of the discussion of the study named above.
If you feel hungry, drink a glass of water or cold tea and wait for 10-15 minutes. If the hunger subsides, chances are that you actually felt thirst. Train yourself to differentiate between feeling hungry and feeling thirsty.
Tip #3: Flavor Your Water
Except for tea, drinking water is the best way to hydrate, but not all of us like the taste of it (if it has any taste at all). Adding a slice of lime or lemon to your water is such a simple trick to add some nice flavors.
You might also want to try this recipe for water with orange slices. It's delicious!
Tip #4: Filter Your Water
Tip #3 says to add flavor to your water, if you don't like its taste. But oftentimes, the reason for an unpleasant taste (and smell) are impurities contained in unfiltered, low-quality tap water. If that is the case, add a filtration system to your kitchen sink and filter your water.
Tip #5: Hydrate At Work
Place a full glass, cup or bottle on your desk at work and sip from it throughout the day. Once it's empty, go and refill it immediately.
Tip #6: Reduce The Amount Of Alcohol You Drink
Alcohol causes dehydration in the cells of your body. If you reduce the amount that you consume each week, staying properly hydrated becomes easier.
Whether or not coffee and soft drinks that contain caffeine cause dehydration is something that scientists still debate about. Different studies led to different conclusions.
Tip #7: Eat Fruits And Vegetables
The majority of your daily water intake should come from the food you eat, but not all foods are created equal. Fruits and vegetables hold the largest portion of water. Make sure to eat of them. A rule of thumb is to eat about five handfuls of fruits and veggies per day.
Tip #8: Check Your Urine
The color and smell of your urine is a great indicator for dehydration. If it's dark yellow or orange and cloudy and has a strong smell to it, dehydration has already started. You can find a useful dehydration urine color chart here.
Those were my 8 tips on how to stay properly hydrated when you are in your 50s. Do you have more tips to add? Which of the tips have you already implemented in your life? Which are you going to try out?
