Around the World in Your Coffee Cup
Welcome Coffee Lovers!
Today we are starting a very exciting trip around the world that will take place right in your own coffee cup. Each month we will spotlight a different coffee from a different part of the world. Our journey will begin this month in Guatemala with our selection of Guatemalan Huehuetenango Tres Generaciones. There are many estates in Guatemala that produce coffee beans. The climate, soil and higher altitude make this a wonderful region to grow complex coffees. Guatemala is home to three mountain ranges with active volcanos and sometimes earthquakes.
The first region we will be visiting today is called the Huehuetenango region which is in west-central Guatemala. It lies at an elevation of 6,200 feet (1,890 metres) above sea level on the southern slopes of the Cuchumatanes Mountains, which are the highest mountains in the country. The name Huehuetenango means “Place of the Ancients”. The inhabitants of Huehuetenango are mainly of Mayan decent and many are farmers or artisans. Some of the crops that are produced here are coffee, corn, barley and potatoes. The high altitude, mild temperatures, plentiful rainfall and rich volcanic soil help make this an ideal area to grow coffee. Huehuetenango is located in the North around 5000' altitude. This varietal selection comes from the mountainside Tres Generaciones Estate. The aroma form this coffee will greet you with gentle notes of chocolate and fruit. The smooth body of the cup is a perfect balance for the cherry and chocoalte flavors that will please your palate. This has the charactersitic Guatemalan acidity with a sweet, mild aftertaste.
We hope you have enjoyed your trip to Guatemala with us. Throughout this month we will be looking at Guatemala and the various regions and the coffees they produce. Be sure to check out this month's selection Guatemalan Huehuetenango Tres Generaciones available at SBS Teas!
